Did you know that the food you eat can have different effects on your health? Everyone has moments when they crave that ice cream at midnight or feel the need for that extra cup of coffee. Sometimes we don’t realize that the way we behave is because of a certain food we have just consumed. At times we feel extremely sluggish or over energetic after a meal. Some people also eat food that is loaded with calories, just to get over a temporary ill disposition. Here is what you need to eat for your different mood swings.

When you are feeling sad

Oranges and Papayas – These are called “Happy fruits” by some. They contain folic acid or Vitamin B6 which converts the carbohydrates into glucose that provides energy. Even the scent of oranges is said to make you feel happy.

Salmon – Salmon contains long chain omega 3 fatty acidsthat are said to have antidepressant effects.

When you feel angry

Food with greater Trans fat – Trans Fat is associated with higher aggression levels and it increases your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. Combination foods don’t have an equal balance of the correct nutrients and disrupt the omega 3 metabolism. Lack of omega 3 fatty acids make u cranky, so it is important to have balanced meals.

Green Tea – Drinking green tea can make you less irritated because it contains Theanine that stimulates the production of alpha waves. These are brain waves that relax the state of mind. It also contains neurotransmitters such as dopamine that have an impact on your mood.

When you are exhausted

Oats – Including oats in your diet can keep you energetic because they are high in fiber and protein that stabilize the blood sugar.

Light dinner – If you are already tired, avoid having a heavy meal as it doesn’t allow you to sleep well. While it normally makes you sleepy, alcohol intake too close to bedtime can also be a problem because it will interrupt with your rapid eye movement sleep.

When you feel lazy

Spinach – Spinach lowers the homocysteine levels in the body and is one of the richest sources of iron, important for increased energy levels. It can get you out of the afternoon sluggish mood.

Almonds –These nuts are packed with powerful nutrients like Vitamin B2, magnesium, Vitamin E, phosphorus, etc. which essentially aid biological processes thatconverts sugar into energy. They also keep you full for longer periods of time.

Food habits control not only our physical personality but also our temperaments. When in stress or anxiety we first tend to reach out to that chocolate bar. Chocolate, especially dark, lowers the stress hormones like cortisol and catecholamine. Also regular intake of water, fruits and in general maintaining a healthy diet can be beneficial for your overall character.
